Next on the agenda is to trap and kill opossums, iguanas, armadillos, cats, and raccoons by shooting them!

Reports are coming in that their research includes setting baited traps along the refuge property.  Gosh, this sounds a whole lot like a repeat of what was going on in Pennekamp Park a few years ago, but they had a gas chamber to kill everything they caught.  And interestingly, it was reportedly at the time that Ms. Morkill was staying at the park.

May 8th, 2008 Stakeholders Meeting

The final meeting of the Stakeholders with the mediator for the refuge will take place on Thursday, May 8th on Big Pine Key.  The outcome is still in Anne Morkill's hands, as she has final say.  Everyone involved in the mediation has worked extremely hard to help her see that THERE IS A BETTER WAY THAN DEATH.    Killing wildlife is not an option!!!  Keeping the shelter open  on Big Pine is imperative.  Allowing the wildlife groups to develop an EDUCATIONAL AND WILDLIFE RESCUE FACILITY for the Florida Keys in a given.  The enormous responsibility of educating the citizens and visitors of the Florida Keys about our very unique ecosystem and  providing them with valuable information about preserving these very special islands is without a doubt the most important aspect of a center that will benefit the wildlife, citizens, and visitors alike.  Please help to promote this idea and demand of our state and county officials that this happens  so our children will know what we have come to love.  The Florida Keys forever!

MORKILL HAS NOW SCHEDULED 30 ACRES TO BE BURNED IN THE REFUGE!  STARTING IN JANUARY 2009 SYSTEMATIC BURNING OF THE UNDERBRUSH IS SCHEDULED TO BEGIN IN AN ECOSYSTEM THAT HAS NOT ADAPTED TO BRUSH FIRES.  IN FACT, THERE IS A NO GROUND FIRES ORDINANCE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS!  HOW DOES SHE GET AWAY WITH THIS?

!!November 2007 - THE KILLING HAS RESUMED!! HALTED ON BIG PINE

Anne Morkill, the refuge manager of Key Deer National Refuge on Big Pine Key has authorized the trapping and killing of raccoons on the refuge claiming they are a predator species and a threat to the endangered marsh rabbits that reside in the deer refuge, and in other locations in the Keys.  Through long months of debate the refuge was given a grant and authorized to trap and remove only feral cats which were to be given to a shelter.  At no time was any authority authorized to kill raccoons.  They were to be transported to Raccoon Rescue for assessment, treatment, if any, and released.  Pregnant or nursing mothers were to be released on the spot.
