The Munchkins are a really interesting group of characters that live, we believe, on Ramrod Key.  They are the shortest of the Keys raccoons.  Sometimes their little front legs are only two inches in length.  They are very reminiscent of a dachshund in body style.  What makes them particularly memorable is their peculiar habit of ankle pinching.  Since they are so short, that area seems to be the focus of their whole attention.  For some reason, known only to them, they find ankles or a calf most desirable and take great care to sneak up on you when you are least expecting it and nip your calf.  The nip is never hard, just a pinch that is really annoying.  Not to mention the teeny tiny little black and blue marks. The munchkins are the only raccoons that have this particular behavior.  It must be an inherited trait, because they don't learn it from the others.

That said, they are the cutest little guys.  They are so short, and as all the raccoons in the Keys, they walk level.  Their back legs are not long like mainland raccoons, so coupled with their short stature, longish fur, and crazy personalities, they just have to be one of the favorite types to come into rehab.  They do make you laugh with their antics.  They have a great sense of humor!
