History

Established in 1983 as a rehab center and refuge for a few orphaned and injured  wild mammals, Ark Angels has grown into a facility with an  ever-increasing number of wild babies and adults finding themselves in trouble with a wide variety of injuries and physical conditions.  The greatest number of intakes yearly are orphaned raccoon babies, often the victims of trapped  mothers who can not return to them because they have been relocated or killed.   Sadly, some of these infants do not survive, but most do. 

Caring citizens find these babies wandering paths that their raccoon mother's frequented, desperately searching for her.  The lucky ones are scooped up and turned over for rehabilitation and a return to the wild to live a glorious life of freedom in a secluded area.

The name Ark Angels was given to us by a group of Key Largo Middle School students belonging to the Noah's Gang Club.  A group of students committed to improving the conditions of animals and the  environment.  We are very proud to be associated with the students at Key Largo School.

What We Do

Although Ark Angels specializes in the wild mammals of the Florida Keys, often we are involved the the rescue of many other types of animals.  Whenever there is a call, we go.  As you will see on the photo pages, there are rescues from land, sea, and air.  We get babies from all over south Florida, and some that are hitch-hikers from across the U. S.   There is never a dull moment, and sometimes situations are darn exciting. 

Most of our rescues are orphans, but we have been called in for cases of abuse as well as injury.  And, there are always those babies that are turned over to us to be socialized with other raccoons, squirrels, or opossums because a well-meaning individual has tried to domesticate them as a pet. 

Generally there are always babies in the Keys, but not always infants.  During the times when there are no bottles and the millions of blankies to wash, cages are repaired or replaced.  Crates are organized and repaired.  Nets are replaced.  And stores of formula and other supplies are purchased.  Medical supplies are ordered and refilled.  Toys are donated.  And, everyone rests up for baby season.
